Solar Returns in Electional Astrology

How annual solar return charts, profections, location choice, and birthday-city optimization fit into electional timing.

Practitioners + developers~10 min read

This public-facing reference explains how Electional treats solar returns as annual context and, in one narrow case, as an electional location problem. A solar return is the chart for the exact moment the Sun returns to its natal longitude. The time is fixed by the sky. The location can change the houses and angles.

What a solar return chart is

A solar return chart is cast once per year for the exact Sun-return instant. It is not simply the civil birthday. The return may fall before or after the calendar birthday depending on year, time zone, and calculation method.

The planetary longitudes at that instant are global. If two people cast the same solar return moment in different cities, the planets keep the same zodiacal degrees, but the Ascendant, Midheaven, house cusps, angularity, and house placements change. That is the basis of solar return location election.

What matters most

Practitioners read the solar return as a year chart. The Ascendant colors the year. Its ruler becomes a major driver. Angular planets tend to speak loudly. The Sun's house shows where the native wants to shine. The Moon's sign, house, and aspects describe emotional investment and fluctuation.

Hard configurations do not automatically mean failure. They show pressure, concentration, or change. A useful annual reading names the topic and the chart evidence rather than turning a difficult symbol into a prediction.

Location as the electable input

The solar return date is not freely chosen, but the birthday location can be. Moving east, west, north, or south changes the chart frame. This may move benefics to angular or topic-relevant houses, move malefics away from sensitive angles, or place the year's ruler in a more useful house.

The practical rule is to choose toward a benefit, not merely away from discomfort. A city that hides one difficult factor but gives the year no clear support is weaker than a city that places the right planet on the right angle for the user's stated goal.

The three location schools

Solar return practice is not unanimous. Some astrologers cast the chart for the natal birthplace. Some use the current residence. Modern relocation practice uses the physical location at the return moment. Electional's location-election surface belongs to the third school and should label that choice clearly.

This also preserves an important boundary: the natal chart is not relocated. Natal houses, natal rulers, natal promises, and natal contacts stay birth-based. Only the solar return chart frame changes.

Profections and annual context

Profections identify the activated house for the year and the Lord of the Year. Electional treats this as companion context, not as a replacement for the solar return. When the profected house, Lord of the Year, solar return angles, and current transits point toward the same topic, the annual signal is stronger.

When those layers disagree, the product should show the disagreement. A birthday-city score is less convincing if the profection and transits do not support the stated goal.

How scoring should behave

Annual scoring has to stay bounded. A solar return can add context to an election, but it should not create a strong window by itself. In the dedicated solar return surface, categories are scored broadly: career, love, wealth, healing, protection, knowledge, spiritual work, release, and luck. That is appropriate because a solar return describes a year, not one specific hour.

Location election is likewise comparative. The useful question is not "is this city perfect?" It is "does this city improve the annual chart for this goal compared with the default location?"

Limits of relocation

You can relocate a solar return chart, but you cannot relocate all predictive techniques. Transits, progressions, directions, and natal promise may continue to emphasize the same life lesson. A relocated return can frame a year differently; it is not an escape hatch.

The public product should therefore show both support and restraint: exact return time, location basis, angular planets, year ruler, activated houses, and the reason a city ranked. The value is not a promise of a better year. The value is a transparent comparison of annual chart emphasis.
