- Every birthday, it advances by one whole sign.
- The sign it lands on identifies the year's emphasized house.
- The ruler of that sign becomes the Lord of the Year.
- The 12-year cycle repeats: ages 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 all activate house 1.
