The 12 houses are wedges of the local sky divided by the chart's angles (ASC, IC, DSC, MC), each governing a different domain of life.
Topical assignment: 1=self/body, 2=money/resources, 3=communication/siblings, 4=home/roots, 5=creativity/children/pleasure, 6=work/health, 7=partners, 8=transformation/shared resources, 9=travel/higher learning, 10=career/public life, 11=community/gains, 12=inner work/release. House systems (Placidus, Whole Sign, Koch, Regiomontanus) divide them differently.
